How did you find this Internship and why did you join this Internship?

I initially started as a shadow, where I quickly learned that the interns handle all sorts of tasks—preparing and writing patient charts and notes, running clinics, scribing, placing orders and referrals, answering phone calls, and more. Seeking more clinical experience, this opportunity was exactly what I needed. Additionally, the opportunities to shadow surgeries provide further exposure to the field.

How did you get academic credit from your school?

I applied for academic credit by filling out the form for permission to enroll in PRAC 471a/472b, Fieldwork Practicum Analysis.

Now that you are finished with the Internship, what would you tell another person from your school about this Internship?

This experience will push your limits and make you a sharper individual. You'll gain a deep understanding of the American healthcare system—an advantage to have at such an early stage in your career. This internship solidified my desire to pursue a future in medicine. If you're on the fence, go for it! It will either confirm your suspicion or help you realize it may not be your long-term path. Dr. Yoo, Dr. White, and the NPs foster an environment conducive to learning, even if you do not know much about neurosurgery (I knew close to nothing). What I gained from this internship will undoubtedly pay off dividends in medical school and beyond.
