Learn How to Apply for an Internship as a Student from SDSU
Who Should Apply?
We prefer to take students in their last one or, at most, the last two years of college before graduation. We will also consider students in a master's program or a graduate school. Therefore, if you are a first or second year student, wait till you are further along before you apply.
How To Get Academic Credit?
1. Email your major advisor.
a. If you don't know who your major advisor is, you can find a list of all the advisors here:
b. Look through My.SDSU and see what your major electives are, and if there is a class such as Chem 499, Biol 499, etc., that is titled special study. Even if you do not have a class like that, still reach out to your advisor.
c. Email your advisor describing the internship, how it would benefit your future career and relate to your major and ask if you can receive academic credit for it.
2. If you cannot receive credit through your major, email preciado@sdsu.edu.
a. He is the general studies coordinator and can give you credit for the internship through Gen S 200 (under division) or Gen S 400 (upper division).
How To Use Academic Credit?
You can only get academic credit for 9 months. Therefore, if you are an underclassman, then don't use up all of your 9 months of academic credit and then be unable to do the Internship in our upperclassman years. This is particularly important if you want to spend your gap year with us. You have to apply to get a full-time paid Lead staff position for a gap year. There are only a few of these positions, and spending your academic months just before graduation gives you the greatest odds of making a good impression and getting a position.
Types of Internships
1. In Person Internship
The In-Person Internship is designed for students who are located near the clinic, such as those attending UCSD. This internship provides hands-on experience in a physical work environment where interns can directly engage with the team, participate in daily operations, and receive immediate feedback. It's an excellent opportunity for students to build strong professional connections and gain a comprehensive understanding of clinic procedures and workplace dynamics through face-to-face interactions.
2. Remote Internship
The Remote Internship is ideal for students who are not in close proximity to the clinic. This internship allows students to work from a distance, engaging in meaningful projects and tasks through digital communication tools. Interns will collaborate with the team virtually, manage their responsibilities independently, and develop valuable skills in remote work and time management. This option is perfect for students who are self-motivated and comfortable working in a virtual environment, providing flexibility while still gaining substantial professional experience.
