What is the DIAM™ Implant?
DIAM™ is a small spinal stabilization device that is placed between two vertebrae in the lower back. It is not a fusion. Instead of locking the spine, it absorbs some of the load that the disc would normally carry while still letting the spine bend and move. It is used to treat low back pain and leg pain caused by degenerative disc disease.
How does it work?
When discs wear down with age, they lose water and height. The vertebrae move closer together, the openings where the nerves pass through get narrower, and the nerves end up pinched. That is what causes the back pain and the pain that shoots down the legs. The DIAM™ implant is placed between the affected vertebrae through a small incision.
Once it is in, it holds the vertebrae apart, takes pressure off the worn disc, and gives the nerves more of the room they are supposed to have.
